An Invasive Species - Kiawe threatens Hawaii's native ecosystems by:
- Displacing endangered native plants and reducing biodiversity
- Altering soil chemistry and moisture levels
- Creating dense, thorny barriers that limit access to important habitats
- Reducing forage quality for native wildlife
- Changing fire regimes, as kiawe burns hotter and spreads fire more easily
Current Status Kiawe is now widespread across Hawaii's drier leeward slopes and is considered one of the state's most difficult invasive species to control. Eradication efforts continue, but the tree's resilience and abundance make complete removal a significant challenge.
